In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the friendship between France and the United States, join us for a dynamic five-week cultural workshop exploring the people, ideas, traditions, and artistic achievements that have shaped France and influenced the world.
Designed for anyone with an interest in French culture, history, travel, and society, this course offers un peu de tout (“a little of everything”). No knowledge of French is required, though participants will enjoy discovering French expressions and cultural references woven throughout each session.
Each 90-minute class combines discussion, storytelling, history, and cultural exploration in an engaging and welcoming atmosphere. Participants are encouraged to share their interests and questions as the course unfolds.
Course Highlights
Traveling in France: useful expressions, customs, and cultural expectations
Paris and beyond: geography, regions, cities, and rural France
French identity and patrimoine (heritage)
Myths, misconceptions, and perceptions of the French character
Influential thinkers and historical figures including Descartes, Voltaire, Rousseau, Tocqueville, Sartre, and Simone de Beauvoir
French art, museums, cinema, theatre, and poetry
Group discussions and participant-selected topics
